Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Lenten Season. This is 40 days (minus the Sundays) before Easter Sunday. During Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, we practice fasting, abstinence, and almsgiving.
Fasting, in Catholic Church tradition, is eating only once full meal and 2 small meals in one day. Abstinence is not eating meat (but fish meat is okay). But, remember that there is no point in avoiding meat if we are to eat luxurious seafood and the like instead. Some people also abstain from things or activities they badly want such as Facebook, games, movies, smoking, etc. The main point is sacrifice and repentance. The money that we saved from fasting and abstinence are to be donated to the poor and needy (almsgiving). Also, we are reminded that we do not live on bread alone. We are taught to be dependent…
